BHS October Parent Newsletter
The October edition of the newsletter is now available.  Information related to Touch Base, October's PSAT, Senior news, and the PTO is included.  If you want to know what is happening at Battlefield, please take a few minutes to read this month's newsletter.

"Touch Base" Event - Monday, October 12
Parents are invited to attend the Battlefield HS "Touch Base" event on Monday, October 12th, from 7:30am-10:00am to meet individually with any or all of their student's teachers for a brief 3-5 minute conference.  No appointments are necessary.  October 12th is a professional learning day for teachers, there will be no school for students.  
PSAT: Oct 14
The PSAT will be administered free of charge to all 10th and 11th grade students at Battlefield High School on Wednesday, October 15th. All Battlefield 9th grade students will take a practice PSAT test on October 15th and all seniors will be involved in senior activities and programming while testing is underway. Read more about PSAT day here. The PSAT has been redesigned this year to align with the redesigned SAT that will be administered for the first time in March 2016.  Additional information regarding the redesigned PSAT is available here.
Battlefield students win VHSL awards
On October 5th, the publications programs attended the VHSL Publications Awards Ceremony in Fredericksburg.  The Lynx Yearbook took First Place in the overall yearbook category. Inside 15000, the school's news magazine, took first place in overall magazine. Mckenna Roper also placed second in the slate for her November cover. Vox Populi, the school's literary magazine, took first place in overall literary magazine, and Alie Poali's poetry spread took third place for "Passion of the Street."
Women in Engineering Day (for sophomores)
Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Training (MST) Manassas is pleased to announce the 12th Annual Women in Engineering Day being held at the Manassas facility on Friday, October 30, 2015.  The event will be the entire day, with students leaving at 7:00am and returning at 4:00pm.  The event is open to women in the sophomore class, and is limited to eight Battlefield students.
If you would like to attend, please send an email to Mr. Huddle stating why you’d like to take part in the Lockheed Martin Women in Engineering Day.  Also, please complete the photo release form and return it to Mr. Huddle (room 1012 or by email), by Tuesday, October 13th.  Please note that for security reasons, all attendees must have U.S. citizenship.
IT & STEM Career Speaker - Oct. 15
All Battlefield HS students are invited to attend the monthly IT & STEM career speaker series, Thursday, October15, at 2:20, in the mini-theatre. Mr. Bob Carlston will present "Designing a Business and IT Infrastructure from Scratch."
Senior Regional Orchestra
Congratulations to Travis Angerman, Phillip Choi, Eugene Choo, Grace Kim, Laura Kolos, Adrienne Hyde, Andrew Schlagel, Daniel Park, David Park, Philip Park, and Aidan Ziemba! All of these students successfully auditioned for Senior Regional Orchestra on September 26th. They have worked hard throughout the summer to prepare for their auditions - kudos to them on their accomplishment!
VA Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars
Are you a junior with a passion for STEM? Are you interested in learning more about NASA-related research? Come to the Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars Information Session, hosted by previous scholar Hannah Stickel, after school on October 15th in the Mini-Theatre. The presentation will contain information about VASTS, how to apply, and what a student can expect if they are a part of the program. If you have any questions, or cannot attend the event but would like the information presented, please contact Mrs. Nguyen in the Counseling Center.
Senior Portrait Make-ups
The final opportunity for Senior Portrait Make-ups is October 23 . If you have not had your portrait taken, please call 703-532-0013.  Passes will be distributed to homerooms on October 22.
Battlefield Club Pictures
Battlefield Clubs will have their club pictures taken in November. Please see the schedule for specific times and dates.
Underclassmen portrait make-up sessions
Underclassmen portrait make-up sessions will be held on November 5 and 6, through the student's English class.
Family Life Education Opt-Out Requests
The parent letter/opt-out form is part of the PWCS student "Code of Behavior & Forms." Objectives by grade level are posted on the Science and Family Life Education web page at Parents should visit the site and review the objectives for their child's grade level or course. Parents may exercise opt-out for any of the FLE sensitive content by returning the opt-out form to the appropriate teacher any time during the school year but preferably within the first month of school. Questions about the FLE program or the opt-out procedure may be directed to Kathy Keesee, administrative coordinator, Science and Family Life Education, at 703.791.7848 or

Slopers Stitch House and the Band Support Organization invite all Battlefield Bobcats to receive **20% DISCOUNT on LETTER JACKETS** The Entire Month of OCTOBER!  
Slopers is located at 10560 Associates Court, Manassas and they are open Monday-Friday: 10am-6pm 
*A portion of all sales will support the BHS Band program.
Application for Fee Waiver
Students that are eligible to receive free or reduced meals, and whose parent/guardian provides consent for the release of their eligibility status, may be eligible for fee waivers. In order to obtain the applicable fee waivers, please complete this form and return it to your school’s cafeteria manager. By completing this form, you are authorizing the cafeteria manager to release the pertinent information to the school’s office staff.
Are you a Mountain View Alum?
Former students and families of Mountain View Elementary School are cordially invited by the Mountain View Saff to attend a short celebration of their 20th anniversary on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015 at 10:00am.  Light refreshments will be served.
